MPD and HPU project in Las Palmas

Vinje Industri's Las Palmas division completed an exciting project where we installed stainless steel pipes and hoses to connect an MPD HPU to an Umbilical Reel. The work also included all welded pipe supports, and the results have been met with great satisfaction from the customer.

What are MPD and HPU?

MPD (Managed Pressure Drilling) is an advanced drilling technology used to control borehole pressure more precisely than traditional methods. This allows for more efficient and safer drilling, especially in challenging formations with varying pressure conditions.

HPU (Hydraulic Power Unit) is a hydraulic power source that supplies pressurized hydraulic oil to operate various systems and components in an installation. In this project, the HPU serves as a power source for the hydraulic system, ensuring that necessary moving parts function properly.

Planning Phase

The project began with a thorough planning phase where we determined the optimal routing for the pipes and the placement of support points for welding. After discussions with the customer, we proposed welding the pipes directly to the HPU frame, which was approved. This ensured a stable and durable installation that met all safety and functionality requirements.

Execution and Challenges

The installation involved the use of Parker hoses and seamless stainless steel pipes, materials known for their quality and durability. The biggest challenge in this project was determining the best routing for the pipe installation. Our team in Las Palmas worked closely together to find a solution that was both practical and efficient.
