Vinje Industri contributes to extending the lifetime of the Balder field – our work on FPSO Jotun A
FPSO Jotun A has been an important part of the Norwegian oil and gas industry since 1999. After more than 20 years, it is restored to play a central role in the Balder Future project. Once the vessel is in place, it will contribute to increased production, value creation, and further development of the Balder field – ensuring jobs and revenue for decades to come. Vinje Industri has played a key role in upgrading Jotun A and has provided critical expertise in mechanical work, hydraulics, piping, and welding.

Our contribution to the project
As part of this extensive project, Vinje Industri has delivered a range of specialized services to ensure that FPSO Jotun A is ready for operation. Our skilled hydraulic specialists, riggers, and mechanics have worked on testing, repairs, and quality assurance of systems and machinery. In total, we have had a team of 11 experts dedicated to the inspection and quality control of the technical components onboard.
Dynamic commissioning – a critical phase
One of the most important phases of our work has been dynamic commissioning, where we have tested the systems during operation to ensure optimal functionality. Our pipefitters and mechanics have played a key role in this process, assisting with the "line-up" of systems and reviewing valve and blinding lists for start-up clearance. Additionally, Vinje Industri, together with Norse, has carried out extensive overhauls of critical piping systems onboard.
The work has been demanding, but thanks to our close collaboration with Vendor and Aker Solutions, we have executed the assignment in accordance with the strictest quality and safety requirements.
Rebuilding the Deluge firewater system
In addition to commissioning, Vinje Industri has been responsible for a comprehensive rebuilding of the Deluge firewater system onboard. Safety on a platform is of the highest priority, and this project has required a broad range of expertise. Vinje Industri has mobilized a dedicated team consisting of welders, pipefitters, document controllers, and supervisors, leading to a significant increase in staffing. To meet the project requirements, we have expanded our workforce from 11 to 22 skilled employees who are working diligently to ensure a safe and efficient upgrade.
Our multidisciplinary expertise – a key factor
Vinje Industri has a unique strength in our multidisciplinary expertise, enabling us to deliver comprehensive solutions in large and complex projects. Through this assignment, we have demonstrated how our experienced team can handle everything from hydraulics and mechanical work to welding and piping – all in close cooperation with project management.
Our team consists of 1 foreman, 6 hydraulic specialists/mechanics, 5 pipefitters/mechanics, and rig pullers working 12-hour shifts, 7 days a week. This flexibility and dedication are crucial to keeping the project on track.
The road ahead
The project on FPSO Jotun A has been a demanding yet exciting assignment for Vinje Industri. We are proud to have contributed to the modernization of the platform and look forward to following its further development in the Balder Future project.
We thank our skilled employees for their efforts and look forward to new exciting challenges!
